POPULAR QUESTIONS

  • What is a state inspection, and why do I need it?

There are really two inspection that you need to be road legal in Philadelphia. While it may seem like a hassle, both are very important to the health and safety of all drivers on the road.

First, and most importantly, there is the Safety Inspection. States that require annual safety inspections have lower rates of mortality in vehicular collisions. Mandatory safety inspections mean that you can rest easy knowing that your tires are strong and your brakes will work. It also mean that the person driving next to you has good tires, and the person behind you has good brakes, too.

There’s also a federally required Emissions Inspection, managed by the State of Pennsylvania and part of the Safety Inspection. You need to PASS the Emissions Inspection to pass the Safety Inspection.

Especially if you live in the city, you can see why this is important! Emissions inspections help keep the amount of dangerous chemicals to a minimum. It means that are Philly is healthier, and we can let our children breath the air without fear. Emissions inspections are also a great way to gauge if your car is running efficiently. Is your CHECK ENGINE Lite ON? It may be an emissions related problem, so have us check it out BEFORE your annual inspection is due!

  • How often should I change my oil... really?

We get this question a lot. Or, we get its close cousin: “I know I should have gotten my oil changed a month ago, but it’s still ok… right?”

Well, your car will still run, if that’s what you mean! (At least, for now…)

When you can’t see the immediate consequences of missed oil changes, it may feel hard to justify the time and expense of doing it regularly. Oil changes are like hair cuts: if you wait a day or two, it doesn’t really make a big difference. But wait too long, and suddenly you look like you belong in grunge band.

But in this case, the grunge is inside your engine–and it does damage. That means more repairs over time, worse performance, and a shorter life expectancy for your vehicle.

Think about it this way: if you get your oil changed regularly, you’re someone with a snappy haircut. If you’re always late to get it done, every time, you’re a person with messy hair (but occasionally gets a shape-up.) Regularly running your engine with dirty oil will cause damage. Keeping your oil clean is how to get the most out of your investment.

Finally, an oil change is a great time for a mechanic to give your car a once-over. Remember: driving is the most dangerous activity that most of us do on a daily basis. Having someone take a knowledgeable look at your car will help us catch problems that could end in collision.

  • How do I know your prices are fair?

This is a tough one. Many people come to our shop because of a bad experience with another mechanic, and we totally get it — there’s a few bad apples in every industry. Trust around pricing is especially hard, since most people view car repairs as an ‘unexpected’ expense.

Simply, we charge you for the parts we give you, and for the labor of the mechanics that are working on your car. We’ll be more than happy to explain the cost of any repairs we do, and to give you an estimate for the work. Ask your service writer to explain it, and if you don’t understand, let them know. We have a deep relationship with many of our current customers, and will be happy to put your mind at ease.

When you find a lower price elsewhere (and you will!) make sure it includes the same parts – you can “save” a lot of money purchasing off-brand or used parts. We back up our work with a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty and to do that, we give you quality parts at a fair price, not cheap junk we know isn’t going to last.
